RAMBAM'S EAR, NOSE AND THROAT DEPARTMENT LEADS THE NATION IN PATIENTS TREATED AND ON MULTIPLE MEASURES OF QUALITY OF CARE
RAMBAM'S EAR, NOSE AND THROAT DEPARTMENT LEADS THE NATION IN PATIENTS TREATED AND ON MULTIPLE MEASURES OF QUALITY OF CARE Recently published Israel Ministry of Health statistics demonstrate that Rambam's ENT Department, which has only an average number of beds compared to other hospitals in Israel, treated more patients than any other hospital in the country, while maintaining extraordinary levels of patient satisfaction.
Up until five years ago, the operations of the Rambam Ear, Nose and Throat, Head and Neck Surgery Department (ENT Department) were consistent with the national average and similar to other hospitals around the country. Since then, the ENT Department has been on a sharp upward trajectory. According to a recent Ministry of Health report, Rambam's ENT Department treated more than 4500 people during 2016, as many as were treated in the ENT departments of all hospitals in the Jerusalem region, and the Tel Aviv region. What is their secret? According to Professor Ziv Gil, Director of the ENT Department, everything begins and ends with the desire to bring patient centered, high quality care, using the most advanced and innovative techniques available. The ENT Department at Rambam provides diagnosis and treatment of illnesses of the head and neck, including head and neck tumors, which often require complex surgeries involving extensive excision and reconstruction. The ENT Department provides exceptional care including:
Clinical services and treatment decisions provided by a multi-disciplinary team within the framework of the only center in the country dedicated to diseases of the head and neck.
Patients are allowed to select their surgeon, and are provided with the services of a personal nurse manager, with no extra charge.
The personal phone numbers of the Department Director and other senior staff are made readily available to patients and their families in order to enhance their comfort and security, and to facilitate timely and effective communications.
While operating within the framework of the public health system, the ENT Department at Rambam cares for patients from all over the country through clinics centrally located in Tel Aviv.
Evidence of the success of Rambam's ENT Department can be seen from the results of multiple measures of quality, including : the percentage of patients requiring readmission after hospitalization is low; the average amount of time patients spend in the hospital is low, the waiting time for both surgeries and an appointment with a specialist is generally a matter of just a few days. In fact, by every measure of activity included in the Ministry of Health report, Rambam's ENT Department stands in first place nationwide. For example, in 2016 more than 4500 patients were hospitalized in the ENT Department, 93% of them for the purpose of elective surgery. The ENT Department performed 2700 more surgeries than the next department in the Health Ministry's list and 4.6 times the national average. In addition, more than 25,000 patients were examined over the course of the year in the clinics. Notwithstanding the large number of patient visits and surgeries, the level of patient satisfaction was an astonishing 95%. "In the last five years, The ENT Department has been the only one in Israel that offers the patient the ability to select a surgeon at no extra charge, despite the fact that this option is included in the health services provided by many other countries around the world," explained Professor Ziv Gil. "The success of the ENT Department is underscored by the national authorities, who have determined that this is the true path to advance an egalitarian health system, and we hope that other ENT departments around the country will join us in implementing the initiatives that are working so effectively here at Rambam."
