Australian Mystery Donor Gives Hundreds of Hanukkah Presents to Children Hospitalized at Rambam HCC
No child wants to be hospitalized during Hanukkah, a holiday filled with fun, games, laughter, and lighting of the menorah. So you can imagine how excited the children in Rambam’s Ruth Rappaport Children's Hospital were when an anonymous Australian donor sent a transport of toys—just for them!
Children hospitalized in Rambam’s Ruth Rappaport Children’s Hospital were overjoyed to receive Hanukkah presents from an anonymous Australian donor who wanted to brighten their holiday. It took a special truck to transport all 1,150 toys. ‘Uncle Australia,’ as the mystery do-gooder is affectionately called by the staff, promised more such toy shipments for Hanukkah 2019 and 2020.
The toys, dolls, games, and other surprise packages from Diamant Toys were received enthusiastically by children up to eighteen years of age. After the toy company took the packages off the truck, Rambam’s staff began distributing the gifts among the different pediatric wards in the Ruth Rappaport Children’s Hospital. Helping out were some daughters of the hospital staff who volunteered some of their Hanukkah holiday to help make the sick children happy. Leftover toys were taken to a special Gift Room in the children’s hospital; they will be given to children all year round.
On one ward, the cheerful volunteers met 10-year-old Daniella Abramov from Hadera. She had spent several days in the hospital and was being released on the day of the gift-giving. She was delighted to go home with a souvenir Hanukkah toy and thanked the young volunteers for her gift. A bit further down the corridor the volunteers met David, a four-month-old infant and his mother, Sophia, from Kiryat Ata. They too were thrilled with the unexpected surprise.
“We bump into a lot of donors and volunteers at the hospital who give of their time and money to our children,” members of the staff disclosed, “but this was particularly moving,” they said. “Who knows,” added one of the nurses with a smile, “could this have been Santa Claus?”
