The Rambam Doctor Who Won't Stop Running: 166 Kilometers in One Night
Some people get tired of driving long distances, but Rambam senior physician Dr. Reuven Ishai ran for 166 consecutive kilometers in one night to raise awareness of the problems of dizziness and loss of balance, and to start collecting donations to establish a special treatment center for these medical problems.
November 15, 2020 – Dr. Reuven Ishai is a senior physician in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Rambam Health Care Campus. He holds a specialization in the field of balance and loves to run in his spare time. In fact, Dr. Ishai loves running so much that he has turned this hobby into a tool for advancing social issues, raising awareness of social problems and diseases that need public attention.
Recently, Dr. Ishai took on a huge challenge – to run a 166 km ultra-marathon for the first time in his life, with each kilometer dedicated to the establishment of a center for dizziness and balance problems at Rambam, a problem from which 25% of the population suffers.
The race began at 4:00 pm in the afternoon and lasted until the following morning, passing through Israel’s northern landscapes of the Jezreel Valley and the Gilboa Regional Council. Dr. Ishai was joined throughout the race by other social activists and runners from different awareness groups connected to these conditions, such as the "Kesher Ein" runners group, which includes blind, deaf, and sighted runners; fellow physicians from Rambam, and Professor Miki Sheinovich, Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Tel Aviv University, who also heads the Sylvan Adams Sports Institute there.
