May 15, 2022 – The cities of Haifa and Boston have been connected for more than 30 years, with academic collaborations, student exchanges, municipal cooperation, and more.
Dr. Margaret Fry, Chair of the Boston Society of Pediatric Medicine, recently visited Ruth Rappaport Children’s Hospital at Rambam Health Care Campus in order to learn how its medical staff dealt with the challenge of successive waves of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Fry was greeted at the hospital by Rambam General Director Professor Michael Halberthal, Deputy Director Dr. Yael Shachor-Meyouhas, and Dr. Daniella Magen, Director of Ruth Rappaport Children’s Hospital. They accompanied Dr. Fry to the Wagner-Green Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, where the staff explained how they were able to tackle the consequences of the disease at the height of the pandemic. The unit staff also highlighted Rambam’s unique treatment protocols for children with the virus, which they were able to perform despite contending with large surges in COVID-19 caseloads, and while aiding the older adult population as well. Afterwards, they toured the other departments in the Children’s Hospital.
The highlight of the day was the visit to Rambam’s Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital which was opened during the pandemic for the first time since it was built in order to accommodate the influx of an enormous number of coronavirus patients. It was the largest COVID-19 facility in Israel.
Notes Dr. Shachor-Meyouhas, “I was happy to be able to share with Dr. Fry our experiences in treating coronavirus patients and how we ran the vaccination campaigns at Rambam. We discussed management of the pandemic and parental and staff COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. I hope to maintain contact with Dr. Fry, and look forward to future collaborations.”
Remarked Dr. Magen, “Dr. Fry told me about the challenges faced by pediatricians at Boston Children’s Hospital and I shared her concerns about pediatrician burnout. We found much in common and agreed to keep in touch and collaborate on future clinical and research projects.”
